Further suspension of the league beyond the 2014-15 season will be contingent on Rangers' promotion back into the SPL for 2015-16. Otherwise SPL clubs may choose to dissolve the league and allow Celtic to enter the English football league system. The rest of the top flight clubs would then apply for membership in the SFL.
SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster said the decision was made after considering the serious lack of competition to be faced by Celtic for the next three seasons. "The rest of the clubs have come to the conclusion that with Rangers gone, there will be no serious competition faced by Celtic Football Club for the league title," said Doncaster. "To even try to challenge Celtic would be a monumental waste of time and resources. Therefore the clubs have decided to wait patiently for Rangers' promotion back into the Premier League before competing again."
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell thanked the 11 SPL clubs for their confidence in his team and announced the club's plans for the next three years. "We look forward to focusing on winning the Champions League," he said. "With automatic qualification for Europe, we will be able to attract top players who will not have to worry about the weekly rigours of domestic football."
The SPL television deal with Sky Sports will also be renegotiated with all fixtures to be replaced by Celtic friendly matches as part of the club's annual world tour for the next three years. Celtic will play a series of friendly tournaments in Asia, the United States and South America in between their Champions League fixtures. Rangers are in talks to play Celtic four times as part of the Old Firm leg of the tour.
On Monday the 2012-13 fixture list was canceled and replaced by the date for the trophy-lifting ceremony at Parkhead. Celtic will celebrate winning the title on April 6, 2013, the original date for the final day of fixtures. Details on the Clydesdale Bank Celtic World Tour will be announced later.
